What we do really matters

About CQC

In an environment of pressure and change, we’ll continue to support the system to improve – and take action to protect people where necessary. We know our work is already leading to improved services and better care.
David Behan, Chief Executive

We’re the independent regulator of health and social care in England. It’s our job to make sure health and social care services provide people with safe, effective, compassionate, high-quality care, and help them to improve wherever they can.

We register care providers, then monitor, inspect and rate services. If, and when, we need to we take action to protect people who use these services. Throughout everything we remain independent and involve the public and people who receive care and work closely with other organisations and public groups. As a result we are the authority on health and social care, publishing our views on major quality issues.
